Orthognathic Jaw Surgery Melbourne VIC

Much of our facial appearance relies on a strong jaw structure. For some jaw malformation, orthodontics may not be enough to correct the problem. Also known as corrective jaw surgery, the procedure treats malformation of the jaw, realigning the jaw and teeth to improve their performance and appearance.

Surgery can be undertaken once growth is completed, which is usually between 13 and 15 for girls and 16 to 18 for boys. It can repair facial abnormalities and defects which affect both the mouth as well as facial features. The surgery can provide relief from a variety of issues and provide benefits such as:

  • Correcting overbite, underbite and crossbites
  • Improved eating experience, making chewing and biting easier.
  • Prevent teeth from wearing down
  • Restore balance to the facial features
  • Improve the smile, ensuring lips close and revealing an even smile
  • Relieve sleep apnoea

Although the aim of the surgery is to correct functionality, rather than as a cosmetic procedure, facial appearance is often improved as a result. Over and underbite can cause a weak chin and surgery can correct give you a more pleasing facial profile.

As the procedure is performed within the mouth, you will not be left with any scarring on the face. Cuts are made into the jawbone, which are aligned in the correct position, then secured with screws and plates. If needed, bone can be transferred from another part of the body such as leg or hip. The whole procedure requires a hospital stay, with full recovery at home taking up to 6 weeks.
