Gentle Extractions at Fine Dentistry

Wisdom Tooth Removal CanterburyConservative dentistry is one of our top priorities. Part of our vision for your smile is to help you keep and retain your natural teeth for as long as possible. However, there are often situations where restoring or treating a tooth isn’t an option; when that’s the case, removing it is typically the best way to avoid unnecessary pain, infection or facilitate the rehabilitation process.

Why Should a Tooth Be Pulled?

Some of the situations that call for a dental extraction include teeth that are

  • Severely decayed, fractured or broken off near the gumline
  • Causing extensive pain or infection
  • Affected by advanced periodontal disease and bone loss
  • Interfering with orthodontic treatment
  • Damaged by a past traumatic injury
  • Impacted, such as wisdom teeth

We will perform a thorough exam and take X-rays as appropriate, to fully assess the tooth and areas around it. After having all of the necessary information, we will discuss what the best method of treatment is, including removing the tooth.

During any type of oral surgery, we utilise local anaesthetic to numb the area around the tooth being removed. Analgesic options such as nitrous oxide sedation are also available to help you relax throughout the duration of the procedure. By following proper home instructions and self-care, you can ensure a more efficient recovery.

Surgery for Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth usually erupt in the mid to late teen years or early twenties. However, some people lack adequate space for this third set of molars to come in all the way. As a result, they often grow in at an angle or become impacted within the bone. Such positioning can lead to pain, swelling, damage to other teeth or crowding throughout the mouth.

Due to their location, wisdom teeth are usually a challenge to clean. As a result, they’re at an increased risk of developing cavities or affected by gum disease. Rather than aim to restore and preserve third molars, it is typically better to remove them to halt the spread of infection. We can perform the extraction here in our office or arrange to have you see an oral surgeon in the area.
